raisins, cans of mandarin oranges and pineapple tidbits, etc. Even on superbusy nights, I can still make my “Handful Lunch”—handfuls of pretzels, cheese cubes, and slices of turkey pepperoni thrown into one box, a handful of blueberries into another— faster than I can go through a checkout line at the supermarket with a prepackaged “ convenience” lunch.

Obento or bento?

My American Translators Association-certi;ed hubby says the term is obento, and the honori;c “o” is needed, as in ocha (green tea). Technically, we should say osushi, too, but that now looks too odd in English.

Don’t forget about yourself. Are you lecturing your kids on waste, then bringing to work a microwave lunch, a container of yogurt, and a can of diet soda? Invest in a pretty, mature obento system for yourself, too. Even if you’re a stay-at-home mom or work out of your home, as I do, go ahead and make your own obento lunch.

My apple slices don’t have to look like bunnies, but I ;nd that I eat healthier and exercise better portion control when I don’t wait till I’m ravenous to make lunch.

And while I’m making my kids’ lunches the night before, it doesn’t take any longer to make one more fruit salad for myself.
