MEET THE EXPERTS

Now that we’re settling into our design makeover, we’re beginning to introduce exciting features to our website. Along with media—such as yoga sequences, craft tutorials, and MP3 downloads—three great newsletters, and weekly recipes, watch for new additions to our panel of experts. These consultants have long provided support to Mothering readers. The experts, found throughout the site, are consistently one of our five most popular features. In an effort to keep this section fresh and helpful to our readers, we introduce here four of our newest panel members:

Cassandra Vieten, PhD, is a licensed clinical psychologist, the director of research at the Institute of Noetic Sciences, codirector of the Mind-Body Medicine Research Group at the California Pacific Medical Center Research Institute, and copresident of the Institute for Spirituality and Psychology. She is a coauthor of Living Deeply: The Art & Science of Transformation in Everyday Life (Noetic Books and New Harbinger, 2007), and the author of

Mindful Motherhood: Practical Tools for Staying Sane During Pregnancy and Your Child’s First Year (New Harbinger, 2009).

In 2003, having had her own child, Dr. Vieten applied her long-standing interest in mind-body approaches to health and well-being to developing a mindfulness-based program for pregnant women and early moms. Along with her colleagues at the California Pacific Medical Center, she developed and refined the Mindful Motherhood program, a training in mindfulness tailored to pregnant women and new mothers. She is sure to provide insightful meditations, exercises, and practical advice to bring you and your baby tranquility.

Shoshana Bennett, PhD, who survived two life-threatening, undiagnosed postpartum depressions, is the founder of Postpartum Assistance for Mothers. A pioneer in the often-ignored field of postpartum depression, Dr. Bennett is the author of the newly released Pregnant on Prozac: The Essential Guide to Making the Best Decision for You and Your Baby (GPP Life, 2009), a hard look at Prozac and similar treatments, along with suggestions for natural approaches for pregnant women today. She will be available to guide mothers diagnosed with postpartum depression through the process of finding help and choosing a course of care.

Judi and Shari Zucker wrote their first cookbook, How to Survive Snack Attacks . . . Naturally (Woodbridge Press, 1979), when they were 17. Their other books include How to Eat Without Meat . . . Naturally (Woodbridge Press, 1981), Double Your Energy with Half the Effort (Hampton Roads Publishing, 1991), and The Double Energy Diet: Improve Your Health and Vitality . . . Naturally! (Book Publishing Company, 2008). Now, “The Double Energy Twins” bring their enthusiasm to Mothering.com.

Francie Healey, MA, LMHC, is a health and wellness counselor who specializes in educating mothers and their families about health and nutrition. She helps empower families to make healthy lifestyle changes by providing them with the necessary information to make informed choices about their food and environment. She is also dedicated to shedding light on the critical neuropsychological connections between food and mood.
