I was so excited to see the book reviews relating to fathers’ involvement with their families. Then I realized that Fathers At Birth, by Rose St. John (Ringing Bell Press, 2009), was not included. Barbara Harper, founder of Waterbirth International, said of this book, “For my money, [this] is the best doula book ever written!”

THE GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING
Just wanted to share this photo of my girlfriends and me nursing our toddlers on Christmas Eve. The children were each almost two years old. We are all avid Mothering readers, and my husband suggested sending this photo in.

CPSIA HITS SMALL BUSINESSES HARD
I was happy to see the article “The CPSIA: Taking Toy Safety Over the Top?” (“What’s Kickin’,” May–June 2009). I run a cloth-diaper business, www.simplewondersdiapers.com, and have been directly affected by the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA). What the law will actually mean for owners of small businesses, especially those of us who sell handmade items intended for children under the age of 12, has received precious little attention. Unless it is changed, this law has and will continue to put many small companies out of business.

PENNY-PINCHING PARENTING
Molly Humphrey, in “Your Letters” (March–April 2009), said she did not make enough money to buy organic food. I am here to tell you that you do not need to spend a lot to eat well. My family of three makes very little money, yet we eat entirely organic. How do we do it? We don’t buy into the fad of buying organic processed foods. We buy organic vegetables and fruit, and organic grains and beans in bulk. If anyone would like more information, feel free to e-mail texasmacrocommunities-owner@ yahoogroups.com.
