L IVING TREASURE

Richard Moskowitz, MD, has been practicing family medicine since . He graduated from the Medical School of New York University in .

Moskowitz’s departure from the traditional practice of
modern medicine was in uenced by the study of philosophy
he undertook before going into private practice. Uncomfort-
able with the concepts of elective surgery and long-term
maintenance with drugs, he found that, as time went on, he
grew increasingly skeptical of many things that the medical
establishment took for granted. His sense of himself as a doc-
tor was complicated by doubts about what a doctor’s role
truly should be.

It was after he had attended many homebirths that

Moskowitz found a new role for himself as a doctor, and an entry point to alternative medicine.

“My experience of about homebirths
showed me how to practice medicine in a way
that I could be genuinely proud of and that
still works and makes sense for me today,”
Moskowitz says. “From its gentle, family-
centered atmosphere, it was a short
step to other therapies, such as herbs,
acupuncture, and homeopathy, which
I discovered in and have practiced
ever since. Rather than utilizing potent
drugs to correct abnormalities by force,
these modalities only help the organ-
ism to complete a natural process of
self-healing that is already in progress.”
Moskowitz studied acupuncture
with Sensei M. Nakazono in New
Mexico, and since has used natural
therapies more or less exclusively. He
has practiced homeopathic medicine
since , and has studied with Prof.
George Vithoulkas in Greece, Dr. Rajan
Sankaran in India, and a number of other
teachers. He is the author of numerous articles and
two books: Homeopathic Medicines for Pregnancy and
Childbirth
(North Atlantic Books, ), and Resonance:
The Homeopathic Point of View
( ).

Currently, Dr. Moskowitz gives two-day workshops on the theme “The Medical System Reconsidered.”
