“we all know what’s going to happen. e kids aren’t discovering anything; they’re just doing veri cation.

“ e di culty with that is that they begin to think that science nds out all the right answers and truths—and it doesn’t. It nds out reasonable explanations at the time, given our state of knowledge. When you’re observing the natural world, it behaves as it wants to, and it’s really good for youngsters to realize that—wow—we really have to study this hard and long in order to gure out what’s going on. en we may have some ideas, but they may change when we look a little bit more.”

By the time we did the last run,

Leon knew the drill. Not only was he happy in the back seat with his book, but he sure knew his frog calls. And he knew why we had to take the temperature, why we had to be quiet, and why we needed to go out a er dark.

And he was loving all the rest of it, too—building res, staying up late at night, roasting marshmallows, playing Monopoly in the tent in the rain, baking sticky buns in a re ector oven by a wood re, exploring the nearby woods, nding snakes, and sighting all kinds of other creatures: snowshoe hares, moose, deer, hatchling crows, garter snakes, a sher. Even a solitary lady slipper in a hidden glade. And laughing. A lot. And hearing his parents laugh a lot. Our connections to each other—father, son, mother—and to the pulse of the energy and life around us, were as solid as an old white oak. And that’s what I call an education.
