us from being here at this table together. When we’ve done that emptying, we’ve created a space for relationship.
How o en do I come to the table full— full of the day’s activities, conversations with people, ideas and experiences that keep me from the creative emptiness that’s possible? at emptiness becomes a meeting space that I miss—unless I’m ready to be present. Have I le behind what is necessary in order to meet the children I love, and my beloved? Have I set aside the fullness of myself in order to make room to be met in that emptiness?
Our children know—they read me like a book. I’m pretty obvious, and as easy to read as Goodnight Moon or e Runaway Bunny. ey read my fullness and wonder where I am, why I’m not interested, how long it will take me to fully arrive. Over and over again, they invite me into the emptying life of fatherhood—the vast landscape and wide-open wonder of relationships.
It’s exhausting and exhilarating. Fatherhood takes me to places I never would have gone alone—those emptied places lled with life.
